Homemade Gifts

We forgot our camera and video camera this Christmas vacation. I'm going to have to beg for some pictures from family. But in the mean time, I thought I'd share the gifts I made this year. I had so much fun making them and they were pretty easy!

Buttercup Bag

I even cut down the pattern to make a mini one for Madeline. So cute and pretty darn easy!
The free pattern can be found HERE.

Hobo Bag

Reusable Grocery Bags

I made these out of old flour sacks. My mom had them lying around and said I could use them. Some day I hope to have cool fabric just lying around!
The free pattern can be found HERE.

Sun Hat

This pattern was purchased. It's Amy Butler's Blue Sky Hat Pattern. It was a little more complicated. I luckily had my mom's help. But it was so satisfying to make!

Matt has taught Madeline a very valuable new skill...

Friday, December 4, 2009

My friend offered to watch Madeline yesterday morning so I could do some Christmas shopping without a little, busy "helper" in tow. After I dropped her off, It took me 15 minutes into my lovely freedom to realize I could stop singing along to Raffi and switch it to the radio. :)

Thanksgiving Spread

The other night Matt and I were talking about the last time we had been home for Thanksgiving. I was so surprised that I haven't celebrated Thanksgiving with my family for 5 years! I guess it doesn't seem so bad when you celebrate Thanksgiving like this...

Thanks, Rachel and Pete for making this a wonderful holiday!

Christmas Traditions

A fun tradition my family had while growing up was having Christmas pillowcases. The day after Thanksgiving was so exciting when we started putting up Christmas decorations - especially getting out our Christmas pillowcases and putting them on our bed. It made me get butterflies of excitement when I laid my head down on a cute, red and green, festive, little pillow. :) I decided it would be fun to carry on that little tradition so I made some for us. What are your favorite traditions that you have? Happy holidays!

Random Pictures from my Phone

Wiped out from late church with no nap and a fever coming on in two hours. Poor Girl...

Showing Mommy she knows where mascara goes. That doesn't just come off with a wet paper towel. It looked like she had a black eye all day.

Making doughnuts with Daddy. They turned out great. Tasted just like Krispy Kreme!

Madeline thought this was the best way to use pumpkins.

Gotta Have Shoes

Look how darling these little shoes are!

My good friend has started a site where she will be selling handmade cards and other unique things and sharing great finds with her readers. She is featuring and selling these darling toddler shoes from Poland. I think they are really adorable. Girls just can't have too many shoes...

Visit her blog here to get your own pair!

Happy Halloween!

Despite Madeline's costume being made for cold weather (she's sweating in it), we are having a great Halloween. We carved pumpkins and dressed up for a church party. Madeline and I were skunks and Matt was an exterminator. Tonight we're making homemade doughnuts. I'm starting to feel the holidays coming!!

Obsession with Babies.

My mom came down to visit and brought Madeline a little gift - a baby stroller, baby bottle, and baby blanket. Madeline was in heaven! She LOVES anything to do with baby dolls or real babies. Her other obsession is "Elno" (Elmo) She also started calling my mom "Nanny." I'll be curious to see if she calls Matt's mom that too or if she'll make up another name...

Thanks for visiting, Mom and encouraging Madeline in her love of babies!

Madeline has started praying. She is really good at keeping her arms folded - not so great at closing her eyes. She likes to peek at everyone and give them cute smiles during the prayer. She also likes to fold her dolls' or stuffed animals' arms before praying. Most recently she has been offering the prayers. It goes something like this:
Me: Thank thee for...
Madeline: Daddy! Mommy! Manny (what she calls herself) Jesus....
And then she finishes with a big "Ma-men!"

It's pretty precious. Especially when someone else is offering the prayer, but she says her own at the same time. She thinks every prayer is her prayer :)

Important Research

You may remember an earlier post about my brother, Brady, who is doing research at the University of Washington Dental school involving pregnancy and oral health. He is finishing up his research and his final paper and wanted to share the video he has created. It is actually quite touching and I even learned a thing or two (and I grew up with a dad as a dentist) :) And my cute niece is the narrator. Check it out:

Madeline See, Madeline Do

I have a BIG "helper" all the time around here. She especially likes helping me get ready in the morning. Usually it involves her sitting on the counter with her feet in the sink, rummaging through my makeup bag while I do my makeup and hair.

I guess she's watched me a little too many times because she knows that the flat iron is for your hair and the little eyeshadow brush goes on your eyes. Girls are just too much fun...

Girlish Flair

I saw these darling tissue paper pom-poms at my cute friend Megan's house and begged her to teach me how to make them. She was taught by our other cute friend, Mariah. I guess the credit goes to Martha, but I still think I have amazingly creative and talented friends!

Aren't these just adorable? Perfect for a party or holiday and so easy and cheap to make. (Sam, you can make them as napkin rings...wouldn't that be fun for Christmas?!)

For directions go Here.

And Madeline kept herself busy with a sombrero while I hung them in her room

Last but not least...a Trip to Salt Lake City

We really loved spending time with Matt's family. Madeline loves saying "Pops" (Matt's dad). In fact, now, every time we see a "graying" man :) she points and yells "Pops!"

First Amusement Park

So I have a lot of recapping to do. These last couple of months we have been gone. Matt did an away rotation at the University of Utah. We had so much fun being with family and going on vacations and family reunions. My dad took his staff to Silverwood while we were in Spokane, so Madeline got to try out some rides. She LOVED them! (Must get that from her daddy)

Visiting Grandpa Steve and Grandma Julie's Farm

Madeline LOVED the open space...

Pearly Whites

Teeth were obviously a big part of my life growing up since my dad was a dentist - they still are. Now I have two brothers pursuing dental careers. My brother, Brady, is doing research at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and was wondering if my cool friends would help him out. It's short and just think - you may be helping someone out there have a healthier life and a healthier baby. Here is his message: Oh and anyone can do it - you don't have to be pregnant!

Marketing an Oral Health Message:

I am a Dental Student at University of Washington. I am working on a really important research project looking into the health of your teeth and how it affects your baby. The website is very informative and I invite you to take part. If you want to participate or know someone who is pregnant, please spread the word.

The site consists of a Survey, followed by a short one minute commercial, and most importantly please take the follow up survey before finishing. This followup survey is very important to tie in the work. If you are interested in helping in this cause, please go to the following site:

Thanks for your help!

My Two Favorite People

I couldn't resist snapping a shot of these two having a little father-daughter chat. Oh how I love these two...

Little Farm Girl

Matt is doing an away rotation at the University of Utah this month. Madeline and I are in Spokane, WA for two weeks and then onto Salt Lake City for the last two weeks. We also spent a week at Newport Beach with Matt's family. Basically we are having too much fun. I haven't downloaded all of my pictures yet, but I didn't love the topic of my last post and didn't want it sitting at the top of my blog anymore. So here is a little glimpse of just how much fun we are having...

I take that back...

So I had to laugh at my last post - all those sweet things I said about Madeline. Today I'm not feeling so generous with my compliments. Madeline is generally VERY good in public. She hardly ever makes a peep, but today was a whole new story. Nothing spectacular happened, just the behavior of an 18 month-2 year old.

I had to drop off our car to be worked on and walked over to the mall to wait for it. Madeline was ok at the beginning, but after an hour or so, she began to throw a fit. She wanted to be held, then wanted to get down, then wanted to run away. I had to wrestle her into her stroller. She has perfected this shrill scream - the type that makes her start to gag. She kept this up and people began to stare (believe me - I don't judge moms anymore). My plan was to just ignore her in her stroller, especially since I couldn't even reason with her - it was like she was possessed. I'm sure people thought I was a horrible mom. I felt completely out of control and really embarrassed. She hadn't done this before. We went to pick up our car. I forced her into the carseat - all the while she's screaming. We went home, she refused to eat lunch, (still screaming) so I put her in bed. She's been asleep for 2 1/2 hours and my sanity is slowly returning.

Is this what the terrible twos are? and how long does it last?

18 months

Madeline had her 18 month check up this month. Besides being a little petite thing, everything looks good. Here are her stats-

Weight - 20 lbs 15 ounces - 10th percentile

Height - 30.5 inches - 25th percentile

Right before we are about to go to sleep, Matt usually leans over and says, "Madeline is the best." It's true - this girl has brought us so much happiness. She is starting to become a true girl (tantrums and all) but most of the time she is a sweet, loving girl who likes to help, clean up, play with dolls, paint her toenails, give kisses and cuddle. My friend took some photos of her recently. Check out her website here.

Shoe Fetish

Madeline is in love with my shoes. She likes to go through my closet, put on a matching pair, and wear them around for quite awhile! Stacy London would be proud...

Quiet Book

Before Madeline was born, my lovely sister, Jessica, made every family a quiet book for church. Now that Madeline really needs some entertaining, I wanted to add pages to it. Well now I have and Madeline loves it. Here are the pages:

Jessica's Page 1 - mirror
Jessica's Pages 2 & 3 - felt cutouts that fit into the shapes

Jessica's Page 4 - Laminated pictures of LDS prophets fit in clear pockets. Their name and dates of service are written on each square. The pictures are colored on the back so you can match the color with the outline on the page.
Jessica's Page 5 - President Hinckley's Be's. Each is a flap that has a corresponding drawing underneath. So creative, Jess...

Jessica's Page 6 - In the pocket, there is a ring of church pictures
Malerie's Page 7 - Felt flowers that you can button and unbutton.

Malerie's Pages 8-9 - I printed a paper doll pattern directly onto pellon. I printed the dresses out on pellon and ironed them to felt. Then I created a felt armoire that ties to store them in.

Malerie's page 10 - Felt popcorn velcros to the tree and can be stored in the little basket.
Malerie's page 11 - Turn the wheel under the ark to reveal cute animal pairs

I had a lot of fun making this and experimenting with my new sewing machine. I hope this means a busy Madeline sits through church without making a peep!
