Communication Barrier

How do you tell a one year old she can't take her baby doll in the bath with her? I had very good reasons (one being the doll's body is stuffed), but as I started my explanation I quickly laughed, realizing it wouldn't appease her or make any sense! Game plan - get down to business and make the bath quick. Madeline normally loves taking baths, but as she was dragging her baby doll with her to the bathtub, I knew there was going to be a problem. Let's just say there was a lot of crying and trying to stand up in the tub while reaching for her dolly sitting nearby. Immediately after her bath, she grabbed her baby doll in a tight squeeze and was completely content.

It's fun being one...

Signs your Baby is Becoming a Toddler

- She holds any object up to her ear as a phone (a true girl)
- She gets upset in the grocery store because she wants to eat everything she sees on the shelves
- She throws fits on a regular basis - arching back, kicking legs, throwing herself on the floor (this can be turned on and off very quickly)
- She insists on doing everything herself and if you won't let her, she throws a fit.
- Life becomes a guessing game as you can tell she desperately wants SOMETHING, but everything you suggest is met with a frustrated cry
- She carries her baby doll everywhere in a tight hug patting it on the back.
- She dances whenever she hears music
- She mimics whatever you do.
- You get into giggling fits with her because something was so funny and her giggling makes you giggle and your giggle makes her giggle and the giggling just goes on.
- She wants to sing the same songs and read the same books over and over and over
- She watches for daddy to come home and when she sees or hears him coming she squeals with excitement and heads for the door.
- If you tell her no, she quickly shoves the thing she isn't supposed to be eating or playing with at you (like, mom, here, see? I'm not really eating it)
- She loves to cuddle and lay her head on your shoulder while combing her fingers through your hair
- She learns things at an incredible rate.
- As she gets older you start realizing she is becoming a really good friend who loves you unconditionally even when you're grumpy or make mistakes.

I'll definitely be adding to this list, but in the mean time I'm really enjoying Madeline becoming a toddler.

Doctor's orders

Madeline had her one year check up and she weighed the same as she did in October - 16 pounds, 8 ounces. There is an explanation - I am not neglecting my daughter. The week before her appointment, she had the stomach flu and a week of diarrhea. Obviously she must have lost some weight. Anyway, her doctor told me to sneak in butter and sour cream in her foods. I found this rather funny as most doctors are worrying about childhood obesity. Madeline always has a huge appetite and isn't picky at all. I'm pretty sure with Matt's genes, she will always be small, but just to make sure she's healthy, we have to go back for a weight check in 2 weeks. I have my work cut out for me.

This little concoction may look nasty, but it was actually quite tasty. (Yes I sampled it) Mashed potatoes, butter, cheese and a little sweet potato.

If any one has any suggestions for recipes to chunk her up, send them my way :)

Sassy Birthday Girl

Madeline is 1! I really can't believe it. It seems like yesterday that Matt and I were watching episodes of "The Office" at UCSD Medical Center waiting for her to arrive.

We had a little polka-dot party at Matt's family's house. She seemed to soak up the attention. There was hardly a messy face eating the cake. She was so dainty about it - just picking off little pieces at a time.

Madeline is so much fun and is getting quite the personality. We just can't imagine life without her. Happy Birthday Madeloo. We love you!

Christmas Cheer

We soaked in family this year for Christmas since last year we wer 'stuck' in San Diego alone as I was on bedrest. Madeline and I flew to Spokane and Matt joined us several days later. We enjoyed my family and all the kids. Madeline is the 17th grandchild, so there were lots of little ones for her to play with. All of my family was there which doesn't happen very often. We were snowed in as there was about 3 feet of snow and the temperature was -4. It was so great to have a warm fire lit the entire week. Christmas Eve, we flew to Salt Lake City. Matt was a nervous wreck as flights were being cancelled. He hadn't been home in a few years for Christmas and was really hoping for it. Luckily, we made it a few hours delayed. Christmas was a blast. Madeline was very good at opening her presents. It was so nice to be able to have Matt out of school and just relax and have fun with family. It went way too fast!

We're back!

After three weeks of family, fun, food, birthdays, and wonderful holidays, we're back. I'm doing laundry, grocery shopping, unpacking, and cleaning, so I just wanted to post something until I get a spare moment to upload the photos. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year's.

In this picture, we are with Madeline's aunts at Hires, one of our favorite burger places in Salt Lake City.
See you soon!
