Little Book Worm

Matt's aunt gave us The Read Aloud Handbook when Madeline was born. In this book, Jim Trelease talks about the benefits, rewards and importance of reading aloud to children. He describes proven techniques and strategies backed up with the latest research for helping children discover the joys of reading while helping them become avid lifelong readers and learners. In the back, it also gives suggestions for books by age.

We have read to Madeline every day since we brought her home from the hospital, but after reading parts of this book, we were reminded of how important it is and made a commitment to read to her at least a half an hour a day. We also decided to include some time where we could each have independent reading time, so she can see us enjoying books, too.

As a result of this process, Madeline has really grown to love books. She loves going to the library and she asks to read her books many times a day. She recognizes letters on the pages and memorizes phrases from her favorites. It makes me excited to see her learning. PART of me is excited for her to go to school, just so she can soak up everything :) The other part is terrified of that day!

Here is Madeline enjoying two of her favorite books.

  3. Totally Priceless! You are an awesome mom to take that time to read with her every day. But of course, I always knew you would be an amazing mom :) And she's a smart little cookie. You have inspired me to do longer and more meaningful reading times with Summer. Thank you. I get distracted with those darn older kids ;)

  8. You inspire me as always. I read this post last week and bought this book right away. It just arrived, I can't wait to start reading it. Brett and Krystle let me borrow one of their books called the lion and the lamb, not a kids book but so good. It's on the history of a couple who served a 25 year mission to Palmyra and was instumental in bringing the church back to the area.
